Blood Pressure Medicine :(
All my life I have had normal blood pressure. A couple years ago my Doctor noticed that it was starting to increase a bit. I didn't want to go on the normal blood pressure medicine if it could be helped so we talked about diet, exercise, etc. and she decided to take me off all sodium (salt) and caffeine for a month and have me re-checked. After one month my blood pressure had not changed.
I still didn't want the blood pressure medicine so we looked for alternatives. After doing some research I discovered that as men age (I'm 66) they tend to hold fluids and fluid retention will increase blood pressure. My doctor concurred with my findings and she put me on one water pill (TRIAMTERENE 75MG/ HCTZ 50MG Tablet) once a day which is a much milder pill compared to the normal blood pressure medicine on the market. Within 2 weeks my blood pressure was back to normal and it has been ever since.
I'm writing this because I suspect there are tens of thousands of men out there taking strong blood pressure medicine (with all the side effects) when there are alternatives. I'm blessed with a doctor whom I can work with and is not one to simply put a "band aid" on the problem. She truly partners with me to eliminate the problem.
If you are experiencing these problems check with your doctor. Do not go to Walgreen's and buy water pills and start taking them. They need to be prescribed because Triamterene/HCTZ is a diuretic, antihypertensive drug primarily due to the HCTZ component; the triamterene component reduces the excessive potassium loss which is very important.
