Diet for a Diabetic Cat?

My 8-yr-old barn cat, Ben was just diagnosed with diabetes...he was close to death when I found him last week & then got him to the vet...brought him home Mon. after a 5-day vet hospital stay and now he's on 3 units of insulin 2x/day....I just ordered the Dia-ionX...also wondering about his diet...currently I'm force feeding a canned food from the vet....Ben's diet before this was holistic dry cat food....Taste of the Wild...32% protein, 16% fat...but now that he's diabetic should I put him on a canned food? What brand would you advise? Should I prepare a raw diet for him? Thanks for any advice you have. I'm just so thankful to have found your website...this is the most hopeful I felt since he got sick!!!! -Linda-

What do I feed a diabetic cat?

I just adopted a 4 year old Persian cat from the animal shelter. I took him to the vet and had blood-work and urinalysis done and found out he is borderline diabetic. I give him prescription food (which he does not like but will eat a little). However, the canned food he will not eat. What ingredients should I look out for that is NOT suitable for cats with diabetes? -Gail-

What can I make with blended, mashed, and pureed foods?

I'm interested in adding healthier vegetables into my diet, but have trouble with some of them. For me, pureed and mashed veg seem to be easier to handle, but soup and curry can only go so far. I recall seeing a recipe for mac 'n' cheese where carrot replaced part of the cheese sauce, and am hoping to find more recipes like that. Any suggestions?

Cat food not store bought

Does anyone have any cat food that one can make from scratch with things we have on hand at home? I am running out of money and can buy tuna, but don't want to feed my 3 cats just that - they come to expect it and I think they should eat something that won't interfere with their digestion. Any one have any suggestions for me?

Need some help with my daughter :(

I have went to doctors before we left El paso, Texas, and he diagnosed her with ADD but my husband and i do not want her to be on medication. We dont believe in that part. So i ordered the Synaptol today and when i receive it will give it a few weeks to see if it takes effect. She has a rough time reading and that is hindering her spellling at school. I have come to my wits end. I want to do more to help her but sometimes i am just stuck. I dont want her to be on medication because of all the side effects. She is a healthy 8 yrs old and i want her to stay that way. If there is ways i change by cooking her different food that help stimulate the mind or other things please feel free to write. I like all the advice i can get while my husband is deployed to Afghanistan. Thank you for reading this.

Eating on the run.......

I am wondering if you can give me some ideas for healthy dinners to take with us picnic style.I have four kids, two of them very picky eaters and four nights a week we aren't able to think about dinner until 7pm. I am not liking the idea of eating so late so I am looking for some healthy packable dinners to try.

My cat had her first dose yesterday in her food.(2.5ml) She ate 1/2 of it. Then she proceeded to vomit. She was fine right after. How should I go on? Was the dose too much? She only weighs 13 lbs. What do you recommend? Thanks. Cindy

What Do You Feed Your Pets?

The new rage (or maybe it isn't that new and I, myself, just think it is)....Raw Diet for your pets....   What is a Raw Diet?  Well, exactly how it sounds....raw meat and veggies.  There is a huge debate going on in regards to dry kibble in a bag and raw diet and which is the best for your pets.   Whether it is due to a food/skin allergy or gastrointestinal issues all my pets are on prescription formula dry kibble through our vet.  Prescription formula definitely has less filler (Wheat, Corn, Rye, Barley) and is replaced with a meat and veggie that is gentle on their stomachs and digest easy.  My pets have been very healthy since on the dry kibble through my vet.  So at this moment, I have no desire to "Stir The Pot" and see if a Raw Diet would suit them better.   However, I am very intrigued by this Raw Diet and it does sound so much healthier.  I actually discussed this with a vet last week and asked her what her opinion was.  This vet specializes in Western and Holistic medicine.  First she agreed if it isn't broken (especially when a pet is on a particular diet for health reasons) not to change their food.  But in the same sentence she said for owners that choose dry kibble should immediately look for a higher quality, more expensive brand to feed their pets instead of the cheap brands.  The better quality of food the healthier your pet will be and less pooping to clean up.   What are your thoughts on this great debate……what do you feed your pet?  Are you thinking of changing their diet and if so to what?  Have you looked into the Raw Diet?

Which diets have you tried?

It seems like a new popular diet pops up every day. There are always people claiming that this or that diet helped them lose weight almost instantly...but more often than not, these claims stem more from fad than fact. I've never done much research into different diets, myself, but I imagine that anyone seriously trying to lose weight would be extremely frustrated sifting through the colossal number of diets available today. So, as someone who has no vested interest in any one diet, and since nothing beats personal experience, I want to know, honestly: what diets have you tried? What has helped you find success? Which ones just aren't worth it, in your experience?
