Looking for a little direction with our 9 y/o female kitty, Nermal. We took her to the vet to get a sudden limp checked out a little over a month ago. X-rays showed arthritis and mineral deposits in her hind leg joints. She is only 9, but the vet suggested obesity could be a factor in the developing arthritis. Since bringing her home we gave her the pain medication supplied by the vet for the first week (until it ran out) and have been giving her glucosamine supplied by the vet with her food daily and restricted her from jumping up on things -the limp is much less noticeable now. However, a couple of weeks after coming home there was a fight that took place when we weren't around between her and our two male, younger kitties. Based on the cleanup it was a pretty bad fight and even though the boys sustained minor injuries and she wasn't injured that we could see, she has remained angry and defensive towards them and we have to keep them separated when we aren't home/around. She hisses at them every time they come nearby and if they attempt to touch noses with or sniff her, she either hisses or starts a fight. She is touch and go with us as well, can be very cuddly and loveable, but if we do anything she doesn't like (pick her up, make her move, or don't let her be in a space that she wants to be in), she hisses and growls at us too -which starts a fight with the other cats if they're around, as they are defensive of my husband and me. She's always been a little entitled and persnickety, but more in a loveable way and never violent or to this extreme. She's never had trouble getting along with her brothers like this either, especially for so long. It's been about 4 weeks since the fight took place. I'm starting to think there is a bigger issue than just drawn out resentment from a bad fight, but the visit to the vet just before the fight only showed the arthritis/mineral deposits. Could she be acting this way because of pain? If so, is there something we can do to help her with that? The tension between our cats is getting very difficult to manage and I feel like it's only a matter of time before one of them gets hurt more seriously (there have been scratches that come close to their eyes and I worry about Nermal's arthritis with her running up and down stairs during a fight with her arthritis). Also, we are expecting our first (human) baby in December. I'm worried about dealing with her adjustment to that while she's still so upset about this at the same time and I'm not sure how to prepare the two younger male cats for it either, who are still trying to figure the new Nermal out.
