Health Questions & Answers

Hello from a former Michigander! I have tried for 4 years now, Bella is 5 to relieve her skin issues. First I thought it was allergies, then maybe yeast. I have tried every food, shampoo, supplement, now I read it could be Thyroid. I live in Ft. Myers, FL and no one can recommend a vet that can help. Can you recommend someone? I feel so bad my dog is miserable, missing hair, black spots, and itches all the time. I've even tried the thunder shirt. Anything to take her mind off of the itching.

Dear Dana,

DERMA-IONX which is an oral homeopathic product stimulates the enzyme systems in the body which aids the skin and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. The supplements I use along with it include probiotics and Omega 3,6,9. The OMEGA 3.6.9 is especially helpful for soothing the skin. These supplements together with DERMA-IONX can produce a synergistic response. I would also suggest that you give your dog only filtered water for drinking and bathing if your water contains chlorine or fluoride.

For the dietary modifications you might want to try a grain free diet and feeding cooling foods according to Chinese food therapy. If your dog is warm and seeks cool places to relax in he might do better with the cooling diet. Fish and turkey are considered to be cooling so would be better choices than chicken or lamb which are warming. Of course if your dog has a food sensitivity to a particular food do not give that food.

If you need to bathe your dog DEFENDEX shampoo is soothing. I like to use it because it is nontoxic and the essential oils in it are very nice.

I would look for a veterinarian that has been trained in TCVM (traditional Veterinary Chinese Medicine). If you Google the Chi Institute located in Reddick, FL they have a listing of veterinarians by state that have taken classes from their school.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions or to let us know how you are doing.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
