Health Questions & Answers

My rat terrier has been living with an old injury to her right back hip that healed by itself before we found her. She has gotten around pretty good in spite of it for the past 5-6 years up until the beginning of July. One day she just started staying in her bed and acting lethargic. I took her to the vet and on the first appt. she put her on an antibiotic because she was running a temperature of 104. On the second appt. her fever was down but she was still staying in her bed and not eating well. The vet took blood that time and found that she did not have cancer or liver problems or anything besides a high count on something (?) that could indicate that she had had an infection. The third appt. the vet took x-rays of her hips. She said that the break that had healed could indeed cause her to have arthritis and pain but could not be repaired at this point so she put her on Previcox 57mg once a day. After 5 days on this medication there was still no improvement in fact she seemed to get worse. It scared me so I took her off of it today. I hate to see her so incapacitated when she is only 7 years old and was so frisky just weeks ago. I was told by a friend that I could give her a half of a baby aspirin to help the pain. I'm really not sure what to do at this point and I do not want to make matters worse. I have used up my puny $300 savings already and have gotten no where with the vet except ruling out other problems that it is not. I could use a little advise....though I'm not sure what question to ask.

Did the veterinarian test for Lyme's disease? Another thing you could try is a veterinary chiropractor.

They can check for alignment and make any corrections. I have seen amazing results. It is a specialty in veterinary medicine so chances are that your veterinarian has not been trained in it. In the meantime I would suggest that you try Promaxol. It helps to reduce pain and inflammation. It is similar to Arthro-IonX but has some stronger potencies of the remedies in it. If Previcox did not work chances are that aspirin won't be much different. If you use baby aspirin make sure that it is given on a full stomach so that it doesn't irritate the stomach. Please let us know how you do or if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,
