Dear Kayla,

Mange is caused by mites. There are different types of mites that affect different animals and are named by their genus and species. Animals are not a source of spread of human scabies. The animal ones usually only cause a short period of itchiness in humans and do not cause long term infestation. Dogs are susceptible to Sarcoptic mange that is caused by Sacoptes scabiei var canis. It is contageous to other dogs. Dogs can also get Demodex mange which can occur if the immune system is suppressed. It is not contageous. There are also ear mites that affect cats and dogs and other animals. Human scabies is by caused a different mite Sarcoptes scabei, that causes long term infestation in humans if not treated.

If your dog or cat is itching it is wise to take it to your veterinarian to determine the cause. Bacterial or fungal infections can also cause itchiness and be spread to other animals or humans.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
