Health Questions & Answers

My 9 yr old Westie constantly has red and inflamed front paws and nail beds. Vet always tells me that Westies are known for their allergies. I wash her paws with a Chlorhexidine shampoo 4%, I have tried Betagen spray, she has taken allergy pills (with a steroid), over the counter allergy medicine such as benadryl, and has been on many different antibiotics. These things only help temporarily. I live in AZ and Spring and Summertime is a particular bad time for allergies in pets and humans. She licks her front paws until she develops sores.

I feed her Avoderm dry food mixed with some Avoderm canned food. I give her a Nyzymes Antioxidant treat and Omega 3 liquid daily. I also use Suzie's Tartar Liquid in her water for tartar control.

Will your Derma-IonX help with her front paw licking? The pads on her rear paws get red also, but they are not as bad as the front paws.

Dear Debbie,

Derma-IonX has given relief to many allergic pets. You can use it both internally and topically to help soothe the itchy skin. It helps to detoxify the body and stimulate healing. I would switch the shampoo to a more natural, less drying one. You might try Zymox enzymatic shampoo and conditioner that you might be able to get from your veterinarian. When bathing avoid using water containing chlorine or fluoride. If the skin looks red spray Derma-IonX on it to give relief between baths.

For drinking offer only purified water. What is in Suzy's Tartar Control Liquid? In addition giving probiotics would be helpful to restore the intestinal flora after antibiotic use. I like Purina's Forti Flora, but you could also alternate with some other bacterial strains such as acidophilus that you can find at the health food store. You will need to use something daily for a long time because of the severity and duration of the problem.

It may take some time to see some positive results but continue with the Derma-IonX for at least a few months. Healing comes from the inside and works outward. If possible try using as little cortisone as possible.

Please keep us informed of your progress and I would be happy to offer more suggestions in response to your results.

Best wishes,
Dr. Char
