Health Questions & Answers

We have a shihtzu with many known allergies. We had the testing done to see what she is allergie to. She has been on and off cortizone and antibiotics to clear up the skin infections. She is on apaquil once a day and 3 half pills of benadryl daily. We have changed food, used medicated prescribed shampoos, and varied how meds are given. nothing seems to be relieving her from being so itchy all the time. It's quite pitiful, because she seems so uncomfortable all the time. Do you have any other suggestions? Might allergy shots be the answer? All homecooked meals? Help make our pup happy again....she is 8 years old and just developed these allergies over the past two years. It's been getting out of control within the last year.

Dear Sue,

DERMA-IONX is helpful for many skin conditions. It is an oral homeopathic product which stimulates the enzyme systems in the body that aids the skin and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. What sets it apart from most homeopathics is that it is in an oligotherapeutic mineral base which has had a charge added to it.

Initially I would give a half dose of DERMA-IONX on the breakfast and supper food. After there are signs of improvement you can give a whole dose once a day. I would also give Probiotics to aid the immune system. OMEGA 3,6,9 is also helpful in soothing skin and improves coat quality.

Diet can also influence the skin. What do you feed your dog? What kind of water do you give? This is very important.

If you need to bathe your dog you might want to try DEFENDEX shampoo because it contains essential oils which are very effective and soothing.

I would try this first before trying allergy desensitization shots or the homeopathic version of it. Please keep us updated so we can help guide you along the way.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
