Health Questions & Answers

Hi. I have a 12 year old mastiff shepherd cross who has bad arthritis. I currently have him on Arthro-IonX, Promaxol and now Derma-IonX because he itches, bites, and licks at night and he has 5ml of these products each at different times a day but with at least 30 mins between doses. My problem now is that he has become very restless at night, he doesn't want to go outside but just paces around the house even when he is in with us he still wanders around and sometimes comes over and wakes us but not to go outside. Would the Chillout Chews or the Anxietrex help. I wonder if its pain keeping him awake. Its so sad, I hate to think of him in pain. What do you suggest? Thanks

Dear Kerry,

I would use a Chillout Chew in the evening. I would also give a choline/ B vitamin supplement called Geriform to feed the nerves (available from your veterinarian??). How is your dog's vision?

Melatonin can be used for pacing at night. The dose is variable at 50ug/lb of body weight at least 1 hour before bedtime on an empty stomach. Using for 1 -2 weeks may create a change so that it is no longer needed. However, I never start with the suggested dose for an older animal. I start with a quarter dose and watch the effect and decide if the next night the dose should be a little greater. Older individuals need less to get a major effect. If you need to use it for a while skip one night a week.

Diet is important. What do you feed and give as treats? What kind of water? I would also give PROBIOTICS and OMEGA 3,6,9 which can positively affect behavior.

Please let us know how you do.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
