Health Questions & Answers

My dog takes 50mg proin daily to help him control his bladder. Without it he leaks when he sleeps or licks himself while he's dripping. It's messy for us and embarrassing for him (I know that sounds crazy). I have recently heard it can harm the heart and he already has a mild heart murmur. He's 10. What can you tell me about the Proin and what safer alternatives actually work?

Dear Laura,

You could try some Derma-IonX because it contains some remedies that are listed to be helpful with urinary incontinence. If the incontinence is the result of weakness in the rear end and pressure on the nerves a choline supplement called Geri-Form is often helpful. If he seems painful and stiff you could also try Arthro-IonX. If the problem is hormonal you could get some alfalfa extract from a health food store. The suggested starting dose is is .2ml per 5 pounds of body weight, divided into 2 daily doses. It is effective in some cases of hormone responsive urinary incontinence. I addition to the above supplements I suggest that you give digestive enzymes with each meal, probiotics and a fish oil supplement daily. Because of the oligotherapeutic mineral base in the IonX products they help stimulate the enzymes systems in the body to help the body better utilize the other supplements and help stimulate healing.

Please let us know what happens or if you need more suggestions.

Best wishes,
Dr. Char
