My male Bichon who is approximately 10-11 year old (we adopted him from a shelter and we don't know exactly how old he is) had a UTI which caused him to have blood in his urine. The vet has him on 3 weeks of anti-biotics. I have put him on a pro biotic for dogs. Is there some natural supplement that I could put him on to prevent this from happening again?

Dear Shari,

Sometimes your veterinarian will also check for crystals or stones and recommend a particular diet that reduces that type of crystal formation. Sometimes allergies to food or other things can increase inflammation in the body and then lead to an infection. I have used D-mannose to prevent bacteria from sticking to the wall of the bladder so that it is flushed out. Our product Derma-IonX could also be helpful because it detoxifies the cells of the body and stimulates the enzyme systems in the body to help with healing. You can use it preventatively to keep the body in balance. There are some homeopathic ingredients in it that help reduce inflammation in the kidney and bladder and keep those tissues healthier. Besides Derma-IonX and the probiotics I would also give a fish oil supplement daily. Derma-IonX helps the body better utilize the other supplements for a synergistic effect.

Please let us know how you progress and if you have any further questions.

Best wishes,
Dr. Char
