I am watching a dog for a friend who was in an abusive relationship and it has always been an outside dog. I have it inside and my neighbor says it looks like it has mange. I am only working part time and I have cats is it contagious to them and what can I do to get rid of it?

Dear Anna,

Demodectic mange is not contagious but Sarcoptic mange is. I would keep the dog confined to a limited area preferably in an area that is easy to clean. The least toxic approach would be to shampoo the dog with DEFENDEX shampoo. It also helps to stimulate the immune system. I usually use PROBIOTICS, and OMEGA 3,6,9 to decrease inflammation and aid in healing the skin. If there are a lot of symptoms the homeopathic DERMA-IONX can help with that. Your local veterinarian can offer drugs and dips but it can be hard on the pet and the condition can still return. That is why I like to try the holistic approach first to build up up the body.

Ask if the dog has been checked for internal parasites such as intestinal worms and heartworms. You do not want any parasites draining nutrients from the dog. Also check on the dog food to make sure it is does not contain corn or soy. These grains can create inflammation and so should be avoided at this time.

Please let us know how you do.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
