Dear Lorraine,

A hot spot can develop because of allergy or infection. The skin get itchy and inflamed at the spot and the dog chews or licks it. It can get large very quickly. A common cause for this is flea allergy. One flea bite can cause hair loss and raw skin. I use DERMA-IONX, PROBIOTICS, and OMEGA 3,6,9 to help get a hot spot begin to heal. Sometimes the hair needs to be trimmed around the hot spot so the area can be exposed to the air and dry.
