How do you use the glucose and ketone strips on a cat? I really do not want to prick his little ear for a blood droplet but would like to know what his sugar level is each week. Just started 3 units of insulin on 12-23-14 twice a day. His sugar was at 561 at diagnosis.

Dear Kirstin,

The strips from Vetionx are used to measure levels in urine not blood. Vetionx sells them to help owners determine if they need to contact their veterinarian because of changes in the amount in the urine.

If there was no glucose found in the urine, the pet's veterinarian should be contacted before giving another dose of insulin. Some pets will need less insulin to be given as their bodies respond to DIA-IONX.

Be aware that the amount of glucose in the blood and urine will be different because some of the excess in the blood spills over into the urine.

What kind of food and other supplements are you giving? Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Dr. Char www.vetionx.com
