I need help with ear infections in my little dog Sophie. Do you see patients? If not, are there any vets or veterinary dermatologists or pathologists you know and work with? I could travel to your area (you're not that far) or where ever else I have to go. Do you know of any one doing research on ear infections? I'm so discouraged. Sophie has been seen by several veterinary dermatologists, but no one can diagnose. The most recent opinion is an underlying allergy which precipitated an infection, but the infection, for some reason, cannot be diagnosed, and Sophie is not getting better. The facts don't square with an allergy (e.g., I had two dogs with the same ear problem, but one has died). l want Sophie to get over her current infection. Can you help? Do you see patients? Can you refer me to someone?

Dear Kathleen,

I would start with therapy at home and then see what is left to deal with. Then we can decide if Sophie needs to be seen. Where do you live? Initially I would give a half dose of DERMA-IONX twice daily on the breakfast and supper food. After some changes are seen I switch to a whole dose once daily. In addition I give PROBIOTICS, OMEGA 3,6,9, and MSM orally to improve digestion and reduce inflammation. Vetionx sells the first three, and you might be able to get the MSM from your veterinarian or a health food store.

It is also important to check the diet. What do you feed and give as treats?
Diet can influence the condition. It would be advisable to give filtered water especially if there is chlorine in it.

To treat the ears directly I use Zymox Otic 1% for about a week. Then the ears are cleaned and the decision is made to stop or continue using the ear drops for a while longer.

Please keep us updated so we can help guide you.

Best regards,

Dr. Char www.vetionx.com
