Health Questions & Answers

We have a 14.5 year old maltese who has become increasingly anxious the past few years to where she is whining/crying from the time we come home from work for approximately 2 hours. Her licking is worse, her eating "ritual"(baking away from her dish and then moving up to dish while whining, walking around dish several times before she eats. Her behavior worries us that we are afraid of having a heart attack, although she is routinely checked by our vet with no disorders. She was put on Prozac a few yrs back due to much less stress (she has always been somewhat highstrung) but it showed no improvement so we stopped the medication. We are afraid to try any meds now because of her age and what kind of organ failure might result plus the fact she is so little. When I am not at home my husband says she sits looking at the door crying waiting for my return. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you Cindy

Dear Cindy,

I would try Anxietrex in the water and Chillout Chews before you leave. Acupuncture might help as well. But I would start with the supplements first since that is a lot easier. If she is willing to eat her food well you could also use Probiotics and Omega 3,6,9. These are very important in the older dog and for behavioral problems.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
