My 14 year old spayed female cocker spaniel has (2) round spots, one on each side of her anus. On each area, the hair is completely gone leaving a circle of soft pink baby skin. The areas are not infected. I took her to the vet and she was sure it was hyper-thyroidism, but the dogs thyroid level came back as normal. The vet did put her on an antibiotic for a week, but it doesn't seem to help. I think the problem is spreading.

Dear Ellen,

Did your veterinarian check the anal glands? Sometimes the anal glands get filled quickly especially during allergy season. Your veterinarian might have put a plastic glove and inserted a finger into the rectum to palpate the gland internally.

DERMA-IONX has helped many skin conditions and might be useful in your case. I often recommend probiotics and Omega 3,6,9. to go along with it if I suspect allergies are involved.

Please let us know anything more you find out.

Best regards,
