All of my birds have a depluming mite, and two Green Wing Macaws and one severe Macaw died from sulphur poisoning. I am still using sulphur at a smaller dose, and have to gauge if I need to stop giving by diarrhea stools. I am also giving Avian Insect Liquidator and Doramectin and Moxidectin on a regular basis. My African Gray Parrot (I have had her for all of her 21 years) has had a chronic preen gland infection. The vet finally made an incision to remove a large mass of dead bugs. Now she has a large hole in her preen gland surrounded with mange. I can see the mites under my microscope, but when I give slides to my vet, he can't see them. I am treating her daily by rinsing out the pockets with warm chlorhexadine followed by AIL. I remove as many mites and eggs as possible then give 2 drops of gentamicin opthalmic solution. Then I fill the hole with either sulphur cream of about 5% or silver sulfadiazine. This bird is very important to me. Apparently this mite, knemidocoptes laevis gallinae is very similar to sarcoptic mites. None of the vets know how to treat this. I found directions for sulphur bath on the internet from veterinary texts between 1880 and 1922. My other large Macaws are improving quite slowly. Can your meds be used on birds? I have been treating them for years. Help please if you can.

Thank you so much if you read all this,

Dear Stephanie,

Defendex could be of help to you. Defendex works by softening the exterior of the mite so that it dies. It does not contain toxic chemicals so I think it should be safe and effective. I have not practiced avian medicine so you need to make your own decision about this. I have never washed a bird, but I am sure you would know what you can do without stressing them out too much. You might also want to look at our homeopathic product Derma-IonX that is added to the drinking water which would help to cleanse and strengthen the body after so many severe treatments. Please let us know how you do.

Best wishes,
Dr. Char
