Health Questions & Answers

hi, my cocker spaniel (34 lbs, 10 years old) has chronic ear infection. we just finished a round of steroid therapy (baytril otic 30 mg cream), Buddy's ears are now healthy (2 months therapy) but vet says to remove his eardrum to remedy situation for good : ( researching herbs (licorice root?) and seeking a natural product to replace steroid cream without the nasty side effects. Can you suggest a product here? thanks, rose

Dear Rose,

You might want to try to avoid surgery if possible. You could give cranberry extract to reduce the likelihood of re-occurrence. If the infection happens again I would use Zymox otic in the ear if the eardrum is intact. Our homeopathic product DERMA-IONX which is an oral product could be helpful since it stimulates the enzyme systems in the body which reduces itching and inflammation, promotes healing, and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. The supplements I use along with it include Canine probiotics, vitamin C, MSM, and Omega 3,6,9. Together with DERMA-IONX it produces a synergistic effect for a faster response. I would also suggest that you give your dog only filtered water for drinking and bathing if your water contains chlorine or fluoride. For the dietary modifications you might want to try a grain free diet for a while.

Using these products can help to resolve a difficult condition. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
