I have a 12 year old Maltese male he began to not be able to put weight on his one left paw then it went to his other paw he is lethargic and he has a high white blood cell count. The vet put him on the 2 antibiotics that I mentioned above, can they be used for Lyme disease?

Dear Ellen,

Usually Doxycyline or amoxicillin is used. But metronidazole can be used for spirochetes (Lyme is one). Enrofloxacin is used for hemobartonella which might be another infection that could come along with the Lyme. I would also give PROMAXOL to help with the discomfort and stimulate the immune system. I think it is important to give probiotics during and after the antibiotic usage to help protect the gut and prevent bacterial resistance.
