Health Questions & Answers

I have a 10 year old Akita. His anal glands are becoming more frequent. Is there some herb or vitamin that can help him? I do not wish for him to have surgery nor do I wish to have him fixed.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Matthew,

When there are anal gland problems I always recheck for intestinal parasites and also look for the presence of allergies. If I suspect allergies I would give Derma-IonX in the food or water to help the immune system. As a general rule I also think digestive enzymes, probiotics, and a fish oil supplement are helpful in reducing inflammation in the body and this can help slow down the rate of anal gland filling. Derma-IonX helps the body better utilize the other supplements for a synergistic effect. You might also switch to a different type of dog food for a month such as fish and potato to see if that helps. Sometimes the same type of food over a long period of time even though it is by different companies can still develop into a food sensitivity.

Remember to introduce the new food into the old diet gradually over 10 days to avoid creating diarrhea.

Please let us know how you do.

Best wishes,
Dr. Char
