I have a year-and-a-half year old female dachshund. I know that it is very common for this breed to have back problems and spinal disc problems. I am curious if Arthro-IonX would be a good natural product to help prevent her from developing any of these problems as well as arthritis and if not, are there any all natural supplements that you recommend?

I have started giving her two fish oil pills every day with her food – one in the morning and one in the evening. She does, however, have allergies. She has cost me tons of money over the last month (but she is definitely worth it) trying to determine what is wrong and the cause - she was breaking out in hives on her nose and ears and sometimes they seemed to really make her itch and other times it did not seem to bother her. Anyway, this week has been much better after switching her to a different all natural food - one without any grain, gluten, wheat or corn, and with a different protein source. I recently ordered the Derma-IonX and am hoping it will help her allergy problem. However, I just want to make sure that if Arthro-IonX is a good product to help arthritis and back problems, if it is okay to use along with the Derma-IonX – I am assuming that both product are safe to give her entire life. I plan on giving the supplements to her directly as opposed to putting them in the water bowl since I have a couple of cats that drink out of it and I want to make sure that my dog gets the required amounts.

Also if you do not mind, I have one more question pertaining to heartworm/flea/tick/mosquito for my dog. She has been on Sentinol every month since she was a puppy and I would much rather prefer that I can use an all natural product in its place, especially since she has had problems with hives the past month. She does not currently nor has she every had fleas or ticks and I want to make sure it stays that way especially since I have other animals. I have researched some natural products for this and they have such mixed reviews as to whether it is effective in preventing fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. I was looking into getting the following products and was wondering your opinion as to its effectiveness or what you recommend or if you could even just point me in the right direction:

I really appreciate your time and help. I don’t yet have a holistic vet to ask these questions, but that is next on my to-do list.

Thank you,

Tonya

Dear Tonya,

I would concentrate on working on the allergies first. Derma-IonX will start to help improve liver function and that will indirectly help with the joints anyway. The change in diet and fish oil are both very positive changes. I would suggest that you also give probiotics, vitamin C,and MSM. Derma-IonX will help with better utilization of all the dietary components.

I would bathe with Defendex because it is nontoxic and soothing. It does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate as do the majority of the shampoos do. If you Google that ingredient I don't think you would want to use it. You could get the repellent oil drops but use sparingly because it contains cedar which some dogs are allergic to. Are you planning on using a different heartworm prevention such as Heartgard Plus?

Please let us know how you do or if you have any other questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Char
