Health Questions & Answers

My little Westie has developed a skin problem which originated this spring/summer and according to our vet may be the result of an allergic reaction to a flea bite. She has been treated with antibiotics and is not getting any better. I believe she has some kind of dermatitis type problem. The bump will start with a red pimple type spot and then become a flat, crusty, hard, brown spot, then that part falls away and leaves dry peeling spot which turns white in the middle but the brown ring remains resulting in an almost leopard like appearance. She does not seem uncomfortable with it however, it is sensitive to the touch not painful almost a nerve twitch reaction when touched in the early phase. About to tear my hair out on this one. Can you help or offer any suggestions? Carol

Dear Carol,

It sounds like there is a bacterial sensitivity as part of the problem. You might want to look at some of our products to help heal the skin. Derma-IonX which is an oral homeopathic product stimulates the enzyme systems in the body which reduces itching and inflammation , promotes healing of the skin and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. The supplements I use along with it include Canine probiotics, vitamin C, MSM, and Omega 3,6,9. Together with Derma-IonX it produces a synergistic effect for a faster response. I would also suggest that you give your dog only filtered water for drinking and bathing if your water contains chlorine or fluoride. For the dietary modifications you might want to try a grain free diet for a while.

Defendex shampoo which is nontoxic washes away debris and soothes the skin. Using these products is a simple and effective way of helping resolve a difficult condition. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
