Health Questions & Answers

My 15 year old Peck-a-Poo was diagnosed with Diabetes about 5 weeks ago. I am giving her 2 units of insulin twice a day. I am confused over the food thing as many of your readers. Vet put my dog on Science Presription W/D wet and dry. I am surprised at the grain amount and so little "meat" . Star hates the taste and won't eat it unless she is starving. This can not be good. What is a normal glucose for dogs and can diabetes be controlled with a whole food "home cooked" meals? She is blind and is hard of hearing, just what am I doing by going through this regime at her age? -Dee-

Dear Dee,

Normal blood sugar is 60- 120 mg/dl. Since she doesn't like the prescription food, you could home prepare food. At her age you probably want her to enjoy her remaining time. There are recipes in the book, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats which may be more palatable. The goal is to have a low sugar and low fat diet. You might also try Dia-IonX to help reduce the symptoms of diabetes. There are other supplements that I use for diabetes but I would start with Dia-IonX. Please let us know how you do.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
