Health Questions & Answers

The local Vet said from examination that my dog had torn the ACL in his left leg. The only remedy was surgery which really is not an option in my case because the dog is about 14 years old, nearly deaf and is blind. The Vet prescribed Metacam and Tramadol. I was uneasy with the idea of a narcotic drug because of fear of possible constipation. I stopped all the prescribed meds and purchased some Arthro-IonX from you and have been giving him this now for about three weeks. It does seem to help him and he is getting around fairly well. My question is, How long should I give him this OTC medication or is this to be an on going thing? He is about 22 lbs so I have been giving him about 15 drops or half teaspoon per day.

Dear Richard,

Arthro-IonX helps to reduce pain, and inflammation and stimulate healing. I think your best response would be if you give the body some materials to use to make repairs. The oligotherapeutic mineral base found in the IONX products helps the body to better utilize the other nutritional substances given for a synergistic response and faster healing. The supplements I recommend are digestive enzymes with each meal, MSM, Canine probiotics, and Omega 3,6,9. I also use Ligaplex 1 by Standard Process which contains nutrition for ligaments. Also be sure to give sufficient fresh water that is free of chlorine and fluoride. If you can gradually phase into a grain free diet that can be helpful too. The other thing that is sometimes beneficial is to have a certified veterinary chiropractor check for spinal and hip alignment and make any necessary corrections. I would give Arthro-IonX for several months and then you can decrease Arthro-IonX gradually to see if the comfort level is maintained. You might find that a few times per week works well. Each individual is unique and you need to find what interval keeps your pet happy.

Please let us know how you progress or if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
