Health Questions & Answers

My Aussie mix is 7 year old, and about 2 years ago she slipped a disk in her lower back that she was paralyzed in both back legs. With steroids the vet got her walking again with slight nerve damage. She seemed to be in pain now so I ordered 4 bottles of the Promaxol which has seemed to help with the pain, but she has such a hard time moving especially getting up. Do you think I should use Arthro-IonX with the Promaxal?  Does this help with a slipped disk problem? She also seems to have lost the feeling of a bowl movement until its to late to get outside. Thank you for your help, -Sue-

Dear Susan,

You can use two half doses of each, Promaxol and Arthro-IonX to see if it provides more strength. In addition it is helpful to give digestive enzymes with each meal, MSM, probiotics, vitamin C, and fish oil. Also be sure to give sufficient fresh water that is free of chlorine and fluoride. If you can gradually phase into a grain free diet that can be helpful too. The other thing that is sometimes beneficial is to have a certified veterinary chiropractor check for spinal alignment and make any corrections as necessary. I have found this often helps with the fecal incontinence. Veterinary acupuncture is also beneficial for disc disease.

Please let us know how you progress or if you have any other questions. Meanwhile I would recommend using a special harness with handles sp you can help your dog up and down and to steady when walking. This can help to prevent injury due to falls.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
