I bought a 20 something horse about a month ago...she still  has some of her winter coat...there is fat where her mane is ...her hooves have vertical lines ...she is fat - does she have cushings disease and is it expensive to treat her. She is a Rocky Mountain...she seems to have trouble biting into apples is overweight had a serious abraision in her eye that made it water terribly and was swollen shut. Is there a possibility of Cushings disease and is it expensive to cure?

Dear Virginia,

It is possible that it is Cushings. It would be a good idea to have your veterinarian out to check the eye and do some bloodwork. Based on the symptoms that you describe I would try DIA-IONX giving a half dose on food in the morning and another half dose in the evening. In conjunction I have also used Equine Metabolic Support by Standard Process and some minerals.

I don't know what it will cost. You might want to call around to ask about prices. For therapy I like to start with the holistic approach first, giving supplements and homeopathics. You can always add drugs in later if need be. Please let us know what response you get and we can offer more suggestions depending upon the presentation.
