Health Questions & Answers

I have a Bombay Black mix he is about 15 years old. During the past week I have noticed the following: Extreme lethargy Starved Appetite Rapid Weight-loss Distended Belly hard ridged at first and painful when palpate. In the last few days the belly is now pliable and pain has subsided. Progressive weakness Minimal bowel movement. Labored breathing earlier in the week until I started giving him the daily hairball remedy. Since his belly has gone down and is now pliable, breathing is no longer labored. I have been giving him Hatz Hairball remedy plus, because it was the only thing he would consume, other than water. I have found small pieces of feces, about 1/2 inch to about an inch. Mickey has had a healthy appetite and really loved his Purina One Lamb and Rice formula. About three-months he stopped eating in the quantity he had eaten. So two months ago, I added 1 can of Purina One canned cat food to his routine. At first mixing the dry food to the wet cat food. He ate the food like he was really hungry. I had gone to wet food in the morning and dry food for the rest of the day because of his finicky habit of only eating certain bit and not eating the rest, lifelong habit, even when feeding him just dry food. Cat treats were a real treat for him, the past week he has ignored them. Any advice? Thank you in assistance.  Jaime

Dear Jaime,

You should start by taking a freshly caught urine sample in to your veterinarian. At 15 years of age there are a number of things that could cause weight loss. Thyroid, kidneys, pancreas, and cancer all could be of concern.

Please let us know what you find out and we can help provide you with some holistic suggestions.

Best regards,

Dr. Char
