Is Pet Insurance Really Worth The Cost?

By Victoria Swanson More Blogs by This AuthorFrom the Paws & Awws Blog Series

Taking our pets to the vet can put a real dent in our wallet and yet, our commitment to our pet's health requires yearly checkups and other visits to the vet. Thinking of getting a new dog or cat? You'll need to factor in the cost of those yearly vet visits, PLUS any additional visits that might be needed such as dental work or emergency care.

The more pets you own, the more costly it can get.

Should you consider pet insurance for just that reason?

Pet Insurance Could Save Your Pet's Life!

Some pet insurance can certainly help with regular yearly checkups, but it becomes even more useful when an emergency occurs. Consider: if your beloved pet became seriously ill or injured, how much could you spend to save them out of pocket?

As veterinary care continues to advance, previously untreatable injuries and illness have been made treatable. However, these types of treatments can be very costly. Having pet insurance may very well save your pet's life in these instances.

What to Look For in Pet Insurance

When looking at pet insurance here are few things you will need to ask when comparing:

  • What type of illnesses and injuries does their insurance cover?
  • Are yearly physicals covered?
  • Normal routine vaccinations and deworming?
  • Spaying and Neutering?
  • Are Cancer treatments covered?
  • Dental?
  • Genetic Issues?

Pet Insurance is typically a reimbursed type of insurance. Find out their process. Ask questions like:

  • How long does it take to get reimbursed from the time you submit your information and
  • How quickly do you have to report an illness or injury to the insurance company to make sure your pet is covered?

Is It Worth It?

The cost of a single pet monthly premium can range from $10 - $60 each month.

And while it is a personal decision, it could be what your family needs to protect your beloved pet from being euthanized based on money alone.

Pet insurance is just another way to protect the health of your pet and show how much you LOVE them!

  • Any suggestions on pet insurance companies you've heard good things about or dealt with yourself? Googleing 'pet insurance' returns too many heavy-marketing pages with too much fine print. I'd like to know what's worked for real people.

  • I have heard good things through my vet about VIP Insurance, it will take some time on your part to do some research to find the right one, but I would ask your vet, your vet will be a great referral source. I would also ask other pet owners (at a dog park would be a great place to ask) or your friends that have pets and might have some information to share on pet insurance.

Unfortunately, there is no quick way to figure out which one will be the right fit or cost for your pet and family.
