Cat has ongoing aggression after a fight & upcoming transition

Looking for a little direction with our 9 y/o female kitty, Nermal. We took her to the vet to get a sudden limp checked out a little over a month ago. X-rays showed arthritis and mineral deposits in her hind leg joints. She is only 9, but the vet suggested obesity could be a factor in the developing arthritis. Since bringing her home we gave her the pain medication supplied by the vet for the first week (until it ran out) and have been giving her glucosamine supplied by the vet with her food daily and restricted her from jumping up on things -the limp is much less noticeable now. However, a couple of weeks after coming home there was a fight that took place when we weren't around between her and our two male, younger kitties. Based on the cleanup it was a pretty bad fight and even though the boys sustained minor injuries and she wasn't injured that we could see, she has remained angry and defensive towards them and we have to keep them separated when we aren't home/around. She hisses at them every time they come nearby and if they attempt to touch noses with or sniff her, she either hisses or starts a fight. She is touch and go with us as well, can be very cuddly and loveable, but if we do anything she doesn't like (pick her up, make her move, or don't let her be in a space that she wants to be in), she hisses and growls at us too -which starts a fight with the other cats if they're around, as they are defensive of my husband and me. She's always been a little entitled and persnickety, but more in a loveable way and never violent or to this extreme. She's never had trouble getting along with her brothers like this either, especially for so long. It's been about 4 weeks since the fight took place. I'm starting to think there is a bigger issue than just drawn out resentment from a bad fight, but the visit to the vet just before the fight only showed the arthritis/mineral deposits. Could she be acting this way because of pain? If so, is there something we can do to help her with that? The tension between our cats is getting very difficult to manage and I feel like it's only a matter of time before one of them gets hurt more seriously (there have been scratches that come close to their eyes and I worry about Nermal's arthritis with her running up and down stairs during a fight with her arthritis). Also, we are expecting our first (human) baby in December. I'm worried about dealing with her adjustment to that while she's still so upset about this at the same time and I'm not sure how to prepare the two younger male cats for it either, who are still trying to figure the new Nermal out.

My 12 year old female Havanese mix has suddenly become lethargic, shaky, not drinking much more water, but maybe peeing a little more. I am thinking she has diabetes. Is there somewhere local where I can buy the Derma-IonX? I live in northern San Diego, Encinitas area. -Bobbi-

Our beagle mix is acting very aggressive

Dr. Wilson, We have a 2-yr-old male beagle/blue heeler mix and he is very aggressive towards other male dogs and he has also shown signs of aggression to our 11-year old son on occasion. When he loses his temper it's almost as if something snaps and he loses control completely and I am worried that we might have to get rid of him if this behavior continues, because as much as we love him, we feel it is our responsibility to keep our child safe and it we can no longer trust him to leave him alone with our son.

Anxietrex and short travel

We take two cats to our second home which about an hour & a half drive. The male whines all the way - especially while we are on the interstate. I think the road noise bothers him. Would it be OK to try this product for such a short trip & how much would I give him??? Thanks in advance for your response!

Fox hound with separation anxiety

I have a fox hound who has spent most of his three years ina and out of shelters. Judging by his actions, I believe he was abused at some point. I have him because my friend, and ber brother before her, couldn't handlt the anxiety. He tore up carpenting and wood work in my friends house. He chews the latches of crates and escapes. I have tried the thundershirt, which scares him more. Now I'm using a pheremone collar and herbal anxiety chews for dogs. I have gradually increased the time I leave him alone which has helped but he still needs more help.

Jack Russell Terrier with noise anxiety

My 13 year old Jack Russell Terrier starting experiencing extreme anxiety as a result of noise at the age of 10. THe major culprits are thunderstorms and fireworks; however he is nervous if the windows are open at night and he can hear traffic noise, and he increasingly does not want to stay outside because of noises--tree locusts, loud cars, etc. His reaction to storms and fireworks is extreme and lasts for hours after the noise has ceased. He trembles violently, paces, pants, drools, and keeps his tail tucked. Sometimes, he even becomes anxious when he senses a storm coming, or even if he notices it is lightly raining. The natural meds he is on (Resources) seemed to help with the sort of normal anxiety related to minor noises, but nothing works with the loud noises. I have tried the THundershirt, Chen Calmer (which he still takes) and prescription meds, which totally make him lose control and he is still frightened. I would be willing to try this but have not seen any testimonials of its success in dogs with similar problems. He does not, nor has he ever had separation anxiety. This is totally noise (and age?) related. It's a lot of money to spend (even with the money back guarantee--dual shipping fees and 20% processing fee). I say this because I have invested hundreds in every "solution" that comes along. I would gladly do it if it would help him. Do you have any clients who have had success with something similar to this? Thanks

Poodle with car anxiety and excessive drooling

My 7 mo. old standard poodle puppy has terrible anxiety and excessive drooling while in the car. He is never willing to go for a car ride with us. I have tried short trips around the neighborhood, treats, play, and soft music, but nothing seems to work. I would like some advice that does not include medication. I use a holistic vet, and prefer to non-medicate with conventional meds. My vet says to continue to expose him & eventually he will get over the fear. I have a Thunder Shirt, but have not tried it for car use. The vet also said that Rescue Remedy may help, but as yet I haven't purchased it. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Anxietrex for dog jealousy?

I have a male 11 yr old pomeranian and up until 2009 had a sheltie who has since passed away. # weeks ago I recently got a sheltie pup. Now my pom will not eat, spits up foam, acts as if he can't walk falls down. I took him to the vet and spent 600.00. They checked his blood for heartworm, lyme, kidneys, bladder, liver, x-rayed his back and everything came back normal. Any suggestions? will anxietrex help him or is there something else that will?

Great Dane with car anxiety

My 2 1/2 year old Great Dane used to love going for rides in 'his' van. He suddenly developed a fear of getting in the van which I can only overcome by putting on his prong collar and literally dragging him into the van. Once inside, he shakes, roams about instead of sitting down, is delighted to get out. I try to make the places I take him fun and interesting but he always does the same thing the next time we have to get into the van, even if it is to go home. What can I do to help him overcome his anxiety?

English Bulldog with separation anxiety

My English Bulldog, Hector, is 6-1/2 years old. I was divorced a couple of years ago and now it is just Hector and me. He has gotten extremely attached to me and it is very hard for me to leave him at home (other than to go to work every day, he seems OK with that). But evenings and weekends he does not want me to leave the house without him. Right now it is very hot in Missouri so I cannot take him in the car other than for a brief visit to a shaded park in the early morning. But it is very, very limiting for me to not be able to leave him otherwise. I am quite attached to him as well, but I need a life.
