Adoption Is the Best Option

When considering bringing a new pet into your home, adoption is the best option. But where do you start? The process can be overwhelming for many wannabe pet-parents that are just beginning their journey into the pet world. But look no further! I've found three websites that can make the journey more enjoyable!

When looking to adopt, it's important to keep your lifestyle in mind, as well as what sort of animal you're looking for. Are you looking for a dog or a cat? It's helpful to research breeds prior to your search. Check out Purebred Star or Feline 101 to give you some great insight on what certain breeds offer and need. Selecting the right breed will be pivotal in your search.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help make sure the breed you select will be a good match:

If selecting a cat, it might be wise to consider adopting two? Two cats offer company for each other. Further, are you looking for frisky or lap-loving? Indoor only or access to the outdoors? Declawed or not? Dog-friendly? Do you want a purebred cat, or just a regular domesticated feline? These are all careful questions to consider before making any decisions.

If you work long hours, can you commit to bringing your dog to doggy daycare or hire a dog-walker for a mid-day break? Are you an active runner that enjoys the exercise of running outdoors, or are you more of a couch potato that enjoys curling up with a good book? Does your family enjoy the outdoor camping adventures, or is glam-camp (a hotel) more your style? Do you enjoy being out-n-about or are you a homebody? Fenced in-yard or apartment/condo living? Many shelter dogs can suffer from anxiety, and all of these questions should be considered before bringing one home.

All of these questions are just the beginning in helping you find the right match. Some websites even have you fill out a profile so they can help narrow the matching selection even more. But keep in mind, as you narrow your criteria, your pet selection will be reduced significantly.

When in each site, take time to explore and navigate throughout its entirety. Some sites offer direct links to rescue organizations, others offer informative articles, and some even offer shopping. Who doesn't want to get their new fur friend a toy or treat?

Remember, when making a decision to adopt a furry friend to share your life, you MUST consider their needs and be capable of meeting them. Being a pet-parent is a lot of responsibility, but the rewards are life-long!
