A Trip out West
I recently visited some family in Golden, Colorado and I must say that I recommend that everyone experience the majesty that is the Rocky Mountains at one point in their life.
The beauty of the mountains is a no brainer, I have yet to meet a person who is completely take by the breathtaking scenery that is a mountain range. The thing that truly grabbed me though, was the absolute enormity of the mountains. Being from Michigan, we see some pretty hilly spots and maybe even a smaller mountain range in the western UP, but nothing can compare or prepare you for the absolute monstrous nature of the Rockies. Standing at the base of the range in Golden really put into perspective how tiny we are as a single entity but the incredibly large impact we have on nature.
The best part about the trip in was the anticipation of seeing the mountains. The catch about that anticipation and staring out the windshield waiting for them (and this is something that no one warns you about) when you are about an hour to half an hour away the snow capped peaks actually look like clouds, while the gray of the mountains blends right into the horizon! So, it's no until you actually start to begin the ascent into mile high country that you get the truest vision.
Word of warning for those about to venture out west, the air is much much different than in the midwest! By different I mean much thinner, since you are about 5,000 feet higher than normal, even the smallest amount of exercise will have you gasping like you finished a marathon.
There is nothing I could recommend more than to take a trip out to the Rockies, or any mountain range for that matter, to take in the majesty and enormity of these natural wonders.
