My top 5 favorite exercises

By Dayton from SLN More Blogs by This Author

I recently realized I've fallen out of my regular workout routine. The past 4 weeks have been brutal with different projects and productions going at the same time. So to get back into it, I thought I'd share some of the core exercises I do to stay in shape!

1. Running!

This is definitely a staple!  It's super easy to do; you just need a good pair of shoes and the time to do it!  It's a super awesome go-to cardio workout for me - especially when it's cold out, and I have my treadmill.  I'm going to try to get back to 30 minutes a day of walking/running for 5 or 6 days a week.

2. Concentration Curls!

However small my arms are, they are well defined!  This is my absolute favorite arm exercise.  I pick a relatively heavy weight for my ability, usually about 40lbs, and do a curl in a sitting position.  The key is counting to 5 on your way up and then 5 on the way down.  It should be frustratingly slow both ways, and it isn't a high repetition exercise.

3. Standard Push-up!

The push-up works your chest better than most exercises!  Why?  You're taking a natural form when you do it, and it hits your muscles super hard.  It can't, by any means, replace a bench press, but for maintaining muscle mass and adding definition, they rock!

4. Bicycles

My favorite ab workout!  You can really feel this if you do it right.  Lay on your back, and lay your hands flat beside. With your legs out, pedal them as if you were on a bike by bringing your knees in and out.  Do 1 set one way, then another in reverse for a good stomach burn!

5. French press

For an awesome tricep exercise, take a free weight over your head and pump it up and down behind you while trying to keep your elbows as straight as possible.

So what about you guys!?  Any favorite workouts?

  • Sounds like you have a lot of favorite exercises! It's a good thing to have :)

I am more of a less-intense workout sort of person. I am sure once I become stronger, I will be able to do more intense workouts. But for now, my philosophy is any workout is better than no workout at all!

I enjoy a simple walk, bike ride or run. Although my running is usually like jogging!

I will have to try doing more pushups, My arm strength is not very high though. Anything you recommend to ease into building arm strength?

  • Things like pushups or pullups are really good to target a lot of your upper body! If you can't do a pullup or pushup or maybe just not a lot in a row, you can do pushups on your knees and work your way up with more reps and eventually full pushups!

For pullups you can use a chair and use a leg to help you up until you can lift your body weight. And make sure u leave the other leg down so if your pullup bar comes crashing down you don't get hurt. That happened to hurt lol

  • I have a favorite move for back fat or as some people call it love handles! Place your right foot up on a step the other leave on the ground. Keeping your knees bent lift yourself onto the step and twist to your back right side.
I place both hands out in front of me bent at the elbows so your arms are L shape, I make a fist with my hands. Try not to look back but only twist your arms back at the same time kick the back leg up off the ground about 2 feet.
You can feel it working right in your love handle area immediately. So 10 reps on each side then start over if you can for a total of 20 on each side.
