Health Questions & Answers

I am very fortunate to have never contracted mononucleosis. One of my friends did and she was able to continue on with her semester at college. She did suffer through the sickness with fatigue, swollen glands and a red, swollen throat. However, she did pass all her classes. Another person I know had to drop out of school because their case was much worse.

Did you have mono or know someone that has? What sorts of things did they use to get through the sickness?

Like you, I've never had it, but my freshman year of college, my roommate got it right near the end of the semester. She had to take all her exams feeling awful. I don't know how she managed it - I mostly just saw her resting a lot - but she wasn't the type to complain at all, so I don't know how bad her case was, exactly.

I got Mono when I was a junior in college and, to be quite honest, it was the best week off of everything that I ever experienced. I didn't have to go to class, practice for both band and sports, work; I just got to lounge around and write some papers while fulfilling my love affair for animated classics and video games. No one bothered me for a week, with the exception of my lovely fiance (who wore a very disturbing mask in my presence). Overall, pretty amazing experience, subtract the incredible amount of glandular swelling and prodigious amount of sleep.

John, I am glad that you had a more positive experience than others. That's good to hear! I think my friend was an overachiever, so she didn't want to miss a thing. And sometimes, it's good to take a break. :)
