3 Steps to a Stonger Immune System

The immune system is a highly diverse structure within the human body. Its function is to protect against infectious organisms and other invaders. When the immune system is weakened or compromised, the body's natural defenses are down and the chance of infection is great. Therefore, keeping the immune system strong is important. The key to a strong immune system is to watch what goes into your body, and that doesn't mean just food and drink. People are exposed to a variety of outside influences every day. Some of these influences are poisonous to our bodies, and some can actually make it harder for the immune system to work properly. Fortunately, most of these are avoidable.

#1 Elimination of Toxins

From the moment you rise in the morning to the time you go to bed, you are exposed to air pollution outdoors, and building and cleaning product pollution indoors. To eliminate as much of the pollution as possible, know your environment and avoid areas where the most air pollution can be found. Eliminating cleaning pollutants from your home is as easy as purchasing green cleaning products and an air purifier. It's a little harder to avoid air pollution out side of the home or workplace. Know where your produce is grown and try to purchase only organic. Some of the toxins found on food such as vegetables and fruits can be washed down the drain, but many cannot. It's also important that you know whether or not you have food allergies. Avoiding allergens will keep your immune system stronger because it won't be confronting the allergy invaders on a daily basis. Adding more antioxidants to your diet will also improve your immune system. Consuming raw, vividly colored fruits and vegetables on a regular basis is a tremendous help to immune system support.

#3 Elimination of Stress

Long term stress suppresses the immune system. The best way to fend off stress is to partake in as many enjoyable and productive activities as you can, without becoming overwhelmed. Often, these are the simplest thing in life: A bike ride with your son, shopping with a friend, a movie with your daughter, relaxing in the pool by yourself, fulfilling sexuality with your partner, or attending a party with friends. The little things that make you feel great are big deals when it comes to your immune system. When you are happy, your immune system is operating at optimal levels.

#3 Adequate Rest

Adequate rest is vitally important to the immune system. During periods of rest, the body is able to release immune-enhancing substances that strengthen the immune system functions. At the proper time and in the proper doses, sunlight is grand, but when you want to relax or sleep, sunlight as well and synthetic light should be blocked. Shutting off the night light allows your body to create melatonin, a natural hormone that not only helps you sleep, it also helps prevent certain illnesses. The same is true of noise. Shut off the MP3 player and radio and relax. If you require sound in order to doze off, consider turning on a quiet fan, or listening to recordings of birds or crashing waves. Your immune system is the first line of defense against harmful influences, and taking these simple steps to improve it will go a long way toward maintaining your good health.
