Is Your Hot Tub Poisoning You?
This may be happening to you right now! Well, probably not to the point where it is coming alive and making you eat foxglove or drink cyanide.
But, it could be hurting you.
I have been researching Bromine and it's effects on the human body. Bromine, although it may be useful in keeping your hot tub clean of algae and other creeping things, exposure to you may be just as dangerous. If it is inhaled or if it contacts your skin directly, it causes direct tissue injury. Along with that, the symptoms do not show up immediately. Because of this delay, it can cause more extreme damage since you are not aware that its happening. What usually happens when there is contact is a blistering and brownish discoloration on the skin, along with slow healing ulcers. This could also include eye irritation, coughing, and headache. At more concentrations it has been known to cause acidosis and subsequent death! Death probably wouldn't happen in a hot tub, but I know that I would think twice before I would use Bromine to clean my tub.
So, are there better alternatives for hot tub treatment? Yes, there are many different products out there that will keep your tub clean with enzymes rather than harsh chemicals. Also, if you don't mind salt water, there are salt filtration systems you can use to purify the water.
