I heard that allergies are more common in western countries, and less common in the developing world, is this true?

Great question! My personal experience would say no when it comes to environmental allergies. I visit India each year and provide medical care in both urban and rural settings. I see a huge prevalence of environmental allergies there, namely due to the extreme amount of dust that people are exposed to. Many people confuse this with something infectious. In fact, my allergies go crazy every time I visit India! I cannot answer the question for sure in regards to food allergies. Children are usually breastfed longer in developing countries so it would stand to reason that the prevalence of food allergies is less.
