FDA Declares Mercury Amalgams... Safe for the Whole Family?

By Smarty More Blogs by This Author

After reviewing 200 scientific studies, the FDA has declared mercury amalgams safe for everyone, including pregnant women and children. The decision was prompted by the group Consumers for Dental Choice, who sued the FDA to require a warning about mercury on their web site, and the court agreed, ordering the FDA to post this statement:

"Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses."

The statement was posted on the FDA website for several months, but they took it down suddenly, as well as removing their question and answer page about the health risks of mercury fillings. The FDA then posted a press release stating that levels of mercury "released by dental amalgam fillings are not high enough to cause harm in patients". This statement indicates their position that mercury does not produce mercury vapor or mercury dust. However, when a dentist drills on a mercury filling in a patient's mouth, vapor is released, and is inhaled by both the dentist and the patient.

Somehow, the FDA believes mercury fillings are safe for children under six because, and you may need to read this twice, children have smaller mouths and breathe a lower volume of air than adults, which is apparently enough to minimize inhalation and its risks. Mercury fillings have been banned in Canada for pregnant women and children since 1996, the same for the United Kingdom since 1998, and banned completely in Sweden and Norway. In a time when many people are choosing alternatives such as composite materials to mercury fillings, it is the poor and underprivileged who have no choice but to get a mercury filling. This two-tiered dentistry has shown that the FDA has failed to carry out its mission of protecting public health. The court ordered the FDA to disclose the health risk of mercury amalgams, and their failure to comply with this legal settlement shows the utter disregard the FDA has for the health of American citizens.

The FDA has not been punished like a normal citizen would be when defying a court order. So far, no action has been taken against them by the government to force them to comply. Mercury is one of the most biologically toxic elements on earth. For years the FDA has issued warnings to expectant mothers not to eat fish due to mercury content, so why the absence of dental mercury warnings?

Mercury in one teaspoonful could contaminate an entire lake beyond EPA limits for water safety, and all mercury used by humans will end up in our environment at some point. Over 30,000 pounds of mercury are deposited into our environment each year, and it is affecting the ocean ecosystem. The mercury in dental fillings is measured in micrograms, so a pound of mercury can have a devastating effect. Fear swirls over mercury contaminating the air from coal burning plants, because the mercury seeps into the air and water, is eaten by worms, which are eaten by fish, which are eaten by birds, and eventually will be eaten by humans. Dentists purchase over 40 tons of mercury every year, meaning over 35 million micrograms are being installed into humans, and ultimately, into our environment. Dentists are the third largest purchaser of mercury, Americans' mouths contain more mercury than all consumer and medical products combined, dental offices are the largest contributor to mercury in the waste water, dental mercury is the largest source of mercury in household waste (through body waste), and in communities without power plants, dental mercury is the biggest source of air pollution because of cremation. And the FDA appears to be OK with all of this. Fortunately, as more people become informed of the dangers of mercury, many dentists are now offering procedures to remove mercury amalgams and to use safer materials for fillings. People who choose to remove their mercury feelings report improvements in seemingly vague symptoms like fatigue and brain fog. Once again proving that, for your health, the most important decision-maker is YOU.

  • I prefer the ceramic fillings to the metal ones. They look more natural.
