The Best, Healthiest Peanut Butter

By

Have you ever taken the time to read through the ingredient list on your peanut butter?

You may be surprised to find partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose… Though thankfully there are many clean options available! In fact, my peanut butter includes two single ingredients: peanuts and salt. To find the best fit for you, I simply ask that you read through the ingredient statement or choose from one of my favorites below.

One type of peanut butter you will ALWAYS find in our cupboard is from the local Michigan company, Koeze. This company offers their original crunchy and smooth Cream-Nut line along with an organic version in their Sweet Ella line. Koeze nut butter is by far my favorite and as it is all natural and free from preservatives you do not need to wonder about the effects of added preservatives as the only thing added is a pinch of salt.

For all of the Smucker’s fans out there, did you know they now make the counterpart to their delicious jams? Smucker’s now offers peanut butter with a rich, roasted flavor that is proudly organic. This line does have an additional ingredient of roasted peanut oil, though certainly nothing to worry about.

If you have a Whole Foods near you, I would recommend adding the 365 Organic Crunchy Peanut Butter to your cart. The texture will certainly remind you of your treasured PB&J sandwiches from your childhood. It is also nice to know that they use only USA grown peanuts!

Whichever peanut butter you are using, I hope you are enjoying it in moderation and avoiding the reduced fat versions as they are typically loaded with added sugars to balance out the flavor.

I choose to enjoy peanut butter almost daily in my morning oatmeal and I would love for you to try out this stick-to-your-ribs breakfast as I am confident it will tide you over until lunch time! And as for those of you with peanut allergies, stay tuned as I will be discussing peanut-alternatives in the near future!

Now that you know my favorite peanut butter choices, what is YOUR favorite?

I would love to hear your opinions on any of these or the type you have awaiting you in your cupboard.

  • Great info, Jessica! I'm a fairly recent convert to the world of natural peanut butter, and I love it :) I can't remember the name of the brand we usually buy, but it's just peanuts and salt. I've heard great things about Koeze, so I'll check it out, especially since it's local!

There's a wonderful market nearby called Horrocks, and when I was there the other day, I saw that you can make your own nut butter there! They have peanuts and almonds in this machine, and you just push a button and fill a container with as much as you want. I didn't get to try it out then, but I definitely will soon :)

  • Thanks for posting this Jessica! I am someone who eats peanut butter on a daily basis, usually for breakfast on a piece of toast. I always viewed peanut butter as healthy, but knew in the back of my mind it contained unhealthy oils. I will have to check out Koeze. Very informative blog!

To Laura, I need to go to Horrocks even more now. Being able to make your own nut butter there sounds fun!

How does everyone use peanut butter? or any nut butter? I am the toast/peanut butter and peanut butter and jelly sandwich kind of person. not original, but still so good!

  • Peanut butter, almond butter, and honey... slap it on nice hot toast so it gets a little runny.

  • Laura, Horrock's PB is my mom's absolute favorite! A long drive from home though, that is certainly a great pick!

Bri, My favorite way to use peanut butter is in my oatmeal or in a breakfast shake - delicious!

  • I have never tried it in my oatmeal, I will have to try that!

  • This thread is making me hungry. Koeze's (pronounced coozies) has been a staple in my family for a generation, I had no idea I could buy fresh peanut butter there. Horrock's is wonderful and not enough people know about it. The selection for special foods is amazing and you can find great deals if you look.
