Four Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat More Vegetables

As a parent, you probably understand that veggies are an essential part of a healthy diet because theyre a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Unfortunately, most parents have a hard time trying to persuade their kids to eat more vegetables on a regular basis. If your toddler appears to hate eating vegetables, youre not alone.

Trying to encourage kids to eat vegetables can be a never-ending battle for many parents out there. But, why do kids hate vegetables? Well, dietitians and pediatric nutritionists pinpoint a lot of triggers including neophobia, current food environment, innate predisposition for sweet flavors, and counterproductive mealtime approaches among other things to blame.

Converting your veggie loather into a veggie lover isnt an easy job. The good news is that it can be easy with persistence and consistency from parents. We consulted a group of nutrition experts for their suggestions on what theyve learned over time through trial and error. Below are four ways to get your kids to eat more vegetables.

1. Appearance is King

Focus on making vegetables look fun so that your toddlers can try them and eventually eat more without even knowing. Children fancy colorful foods, so try to offer assorted food colors to entice your kids. You can as well design different vegetables into creative patterns on their plate.

Children like their food separated into heaps around the perimeter. Add more appeal by shaping their food into a smiley face or heart. Contouring different veggies into patterns is an excellent way to make it look fun for kids to enjoy eating.

2. Involve them in Cooking

Kids are more interested in eating a meal if they offer a helping hand in its preparation. Take your kids with you to the grocery store and let them pick one or two foodstuffs to cook for dinner. Allowing them to choose the things to cook will make them more excited to eat it later.

Better yet, involve your kids in starting a garden and guide them on how to plant and harvest vegetables. Teach them how to clean snap beans and carrots after harvesting. Let them mix the dressing and set the table, which will allow them to develop a sense of pride, enthusiasm, and cooperation at mealtime.

3. Lead By Example

Children tend to mimic the eating patterns of their parents. Leading by example and eating your veggies first is an excellent way to get your kids to eat more vegetables. Kids are more likely to eat and enjoy their veggies if they see you eating and enjoying your own as simple as that!

Cultivate a habit of digging in and eating your veggies so that your kids can learn from you. By so doing, your kids will learn that vegetables are healthy foods that should not be thrown to the dogs. Set an example and let your kids eat what they know is best for them based on what they learn from you.

4. Be positive & Consistent

If all else fails, share a few kind words to persuade them to try new dishes and make healthy choices. Your positive attitude is likely to affect your kid in a positive manner. Understand that some children may not take to new foods and flavors in an instant.

A kid can take up to twenty times before distinguishing whether or not he likes certain foods. So, consistently give them small vegetable portions on their plate until they become accustomed to seeing them. Eventually, theyll find them delicious and may even ask for more!
