Celebrate the Red, White, & Blue-Berries

By Jessica Corwin MPH RDN More Blogs by This Author

With Independence Day just around the corner and the hot summer air sweeping into your home, it’s time to escape into the sunshine and cool off with a few of Mother Nature’s treats. Fruit is truly nature’s candy. Sweet enough on its own, but when paired with even sweeter ingredients - dessert is served!

With our nation’s patriotic colors in mind, try one of these festive ways to celebrate with natural treats that are both nutritious and delicious!

Red, White, and Blue Parfait

First, soak steel cut oats overnight with almond milk. Once prepared, layer them into a wine glass or a mason jar for an easy to-go option. Then pair with blueberries and raspberries, and top it off with a dollop of Greek yogurt!

Flag Kabobs

Alternate pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, and angel food cake onto wooden skewers. Serve with vanilla yogurt.

Star Popsicles

Using a star-shaped cookie cutter, slice out watermelon stars. Then, within each star, use a melon baller to carve a small hole into the center of each and place a blueberry within the hole. Finally, place each decorated star onto a popsicle stick and freeze.

American Flag Pie

Fill a graham cracker pie crust with vanilla Greek yogurt and dried unsweetened coconut. Top with blueberries and strawberries.

Uncle Sam’s Breakfast Muffins

Top toasted whole grain English muffins with goat cheese, raspberries, and blackberries.

  • sounds yummy! thanks for the tips, but who can't eat a bowl of berries by themselves with nothing else added? Just be careful of the seeds in those raspberries!
