I have been using Defendex on my 6 month old puppy she has a half a dollar area on her back and three spots on her right side not as bad as the one on her back which is practically hairless and red and black color. I had used Defendex on my other pup and she healed after a few weeks and it has not returned but with my new pup it cleared then returned wondering if there are other issues that may be going on. My vet gave her goodwinol ointment and wanted me to use Cetricert but don't want to use chemical on her had a bad experience. I am bathing her once week with Defendex wondering what other natural products or if I should bathe her more frequently. She eats a high quality food of Blue. Just trying to make her better. I don't have a lot of money and don't want to spend on tests she may not need or chemicals that will make her sick when I can continue to buy Defendex as they helped my other pup. -Alejandra-

Dear Alejandra,

Demodectic mange is an opportunistic infection because the immune system is weak. I would bathe with Defendex shampoo once or twice weekly for 4-6 weeks or a couple of weeks past having a negative skin scraping. (Or you can spot wash the lesions instead of the second bath.) I would also use Derma-IonX orally to help heal and soothe the skin as well as rebuilding the immune system. Giving digestive enzymes, probiotics, MSM, vitamin C, and fish oil will all help in that goal. Derma-IonX also helps the body to better utilize the supplements for faster results. It can also be sprayed onto the skin to give relief in between baths. I would also suggest that you give water that is free of chlorine or fluoride for drinking or bathing.

Also ask your veterinarian when the last parasite check was done for intestinal worms. If there are any they can drain your dog and make it harder to get rid of the mites or infection.

Please let us know how you progress or if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
