How long does it take for a dog house and a yard to be free of mange after a mangy dog is removed. My dog digs and lays in the dirt and sand she has piled up. She is 16 years old and I'm going to have to euthanasia her. But, want to make sure I don't bring another dog in to catch the mange. I'm not sure she has mange, or just age. But don't want to take a chance. Thank You & God Bless. -Thomas-

Dear Thomas,

The life-cycle of the mites is 3 weeks from egg to hatching. The time it could live after that would depend upon the weather conditions, humidity and temperature. They also need someone to feed on which can involve wildlife in the yard. You also need to be concerned about internal parasites that can shed eggs into the soil which can persist for many months.

Best regards,
