Health Questions & Answers

I just ordered products for my little rescue pup....3-1/2 month old beagle mix. He was diagnosed with demodectic mange, and I had been using another product and didn't like it.  What can I do about his ears? He had a lot of coffee grind material in them and he still is really pink and has lots of little bumps in them. Please help me so I can get him back to good health.

He is such a sweet little guy. I have him on 6 drops of Astragalus - 3 x day to help boost his immune system, probiotics, Nutriska lamb and chick pea kibble, with added wholesome proteins, like lightly cooked burger, steamed chicken, almost hard boiled of those daily with his meals. He has lost a lot of hair on his chin, chest, face, head and one foot. I sure hope this works for him. I am desperate. He was  abandoned as a young pup....along with 5 other males in the litter...dumped behind a dumpster so don't know if he ever got his mother's milk, or what happened to him.

He is very sweet, and loving, but barks and barks when I leave the kitchen (where his crate is, and will jump over the baby gates to get to me.) We have another dog, a Westie so she is home, but not always with him in the kitchen since he is not housebroken, and old enough. I did order the Anxietrex to give him, but any thoughts on his separation anxiety would be appreciated too.

Thanks so much. I also give him two Nzymes antioxident tablets one in the am with his food and one at night, I have colostrum from Nzymes too, but since I heard that Astragalus was a specific to help with demo mange, haven't given him the you think I could add that too? -Jeanie-

Dear Jeanie,

I like to use two of our products for Demodex, Derma-IonX and Defendex shampoo to help heal the skin. Derma-IonX which is an oral homeopathic product stimulates the enzyme systems in the body which reduces itching and inflammation, promotes healing of the skin and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. The supplements I use along with it include digestive enzymes, probiotics, vitamin C, MSM, and fish oil. You can use the colostrum too. Together with Derma-IonX it produces a synergistic effect for a faster response. It can also be used topically if there are troublesome spots on the skin. I would also suggest that you give your dog only filtered water for drinking and bathing if your water contains chlorine or fluoride. For the dietary modifications you might want to try some cooling proteins in place of chicken and lamb which are warming foods. Fish and turkey are more cooling. Beef is neutral. Hopefully he is not allergic to proteins yet.

For the ears I would fill the ear canal with olive oil daily. Wipe off the excess with a cotton ball. Treat the ears outside or in the bathroom if it is a easy place to clean up the mess after he shakes it all over the room. The olive oil will suffocate any mites hiding in the ear canal.

Defendex shampoo which was designed to fight against fleas and mites also washes away debris and soothes the skin. Using both products is a simple and effective way of helping resolve a difficult condition.

To address the separation anxiety you could give Anxietrex. It helps pets deal with various causes of anxiety. Sometimes it is hard to determine the stimulus. You can also leave classical music on the radio to divert his attention. Try to reward him for good behavior and ignore the bad. That is easier said than done.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
