I have been giving my beagle Derma-IonX twice a day (3/4 tsp) for 2 weeks. The itching on his belly and his back around the tail area hasn't ceased at all. This has been going on for a long time..he's had prednisone, diflucan, benedryl, and now cetrizine. I had him bathed at the vet's office the other day. This is costing me more than I can afford..I am a sr citizen on a low income. My husband has mild dementia and was just transferred from the hospital to a nursing facility for rehab because of congestive heart failure. The dog's itching is so stressful to me because I don't know what else to do.

What  brand of food and flavor do you feed your dog? Shiloh's dry food is Rachael Ray both the chicken and the beef mix. Moist food: I cook it myself: Chicken breast, some beef at times, peas, carrots, some rice.  I cool it, remove most of the congealed fat, then use food processor to grind it.

Do you give any supplements?  I give him a multi vitamin, brewer's yeast, joint supplement has he supposedly has a genetic joint problem on his rear leg, pro biotic, Dr's order: 100 mg fish oil, some tumeric sprinkled on his moist food.

Has your dog any fleas recently?  I comb Shiloh daily with a fine tooth comb. Have only seen 1 or 2 fleas. The black dirt I find is not bloody, it is dirt. I do not use flea stuff all the time. I sometimes use diatamaceous earth.

How old is your dog ?  Shiloh will be 5 years old in Feb. 2013. He is a rescue dog.

Do you have any suggestions for me, if so, I';D appreciate. Thank you, -Linda-

Dear Linda,

I would suggest you avoid chicken for 4-6 weeks to see if this helps. Instead use fish, turkey, or beef as the protein source if these are not known allergens. These are thought to be cooler foods than chicken or lamb which are warmer. Try to avoid any GMO grains. I would also temporarily stop the brewer's yeast and instead give plenty of probiotics. I like our Canine Probiotics, because it also contains L-glutamine to help with leaky gut.

I would also bathe with our Defendex shampoo which might help you to spot any fleas. Just one flea bite can the allergic response primed in the body. The shampoo will also soothe the skin.

Best regards,
