Health Questions & Answers

I have a 4 year old female German Shepherd (Charger).  She loves to play ball. This past July, I noticed that she might of strained herself doing so.  I took her to her vet, and the vet did some motions tests on her neck, back, etc and told us it could be sterile meningitis. So Charger was placed on prednisone for a week.  It look likes she got better, but not 100%. About a month later, Charger complained of pain again towards her lower back/hip area. So we took her back to the vet. The vet drew blood for tick diseases and the tests came back negative. She also took xrays and showed us a bit of hip dysplasia. The vet put Charger on Previcox 227mg once daily. It seemed to help, she was more active but still not 100%. Charger had another episode several weeks ago and back we went to the vet. She was given more Previcox, it seems to help, but lately, Charger complains (yelps in pain) after she gets up and will limp her right hind leg. Once she gets moving, she seems to be better. Once she goes out into the yard, she seems better. Could it be leg or back cramping, bad disk or ? Thank you!  -Louie-

Dear Louie,

I would try Promaxol to reduce the pain and help healing to begin. Promaxol would be a good choice for your dog. It contains the stronger LM potencies. After improvement is seen then you can switch over to Arthro-IonX. In addition, it is helpful to give digestive enzymes with each meal, MSM, probiotics, and fish oil. The oligotherapeutic mineral base found in the IONX products helps the body to better utilize the other nutritional substances given for a synergistic response and faster healing.

Either of the IONX products can be used concurrently with your medication if it is necessary to provide a good comfort level. Also be sure to give sufficient fresh water that is free of chlorine and fluoride. If you can gradually phase into a grain free diet that can be helpful too. The other thing that is sometimes beneficial is to have a certified veterinary chiropractor check for spinal alignment and make any corrections as necessary. It is possible for the neck and pelvis to shift slightly which can cause lameness.

Please let us know how you progress or if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char

Dear Kathy,

You might want to look at two of our products, Derma-IonX and Defendex shampoo to help heal the skin. Derma-IonX which is an oral homeopathic product stimulates the enzyme systems in the body which reduces itching and inflammation , promotes healing of the skin and helps with assimilation of nutritional components in diet and supplements. The supplements I use along with it include digestive enzymes, probiotics, vitamin C, MSM, and fish oil. Together with Derma-IonX it produces a synergistic effect for a faster response. It can also be used topically if there are troublesome spots on the skin. I would also suggest that you give your dog only filtered water for drinking and bathing if your water contains chlorine or fluoride. For the dietary modifications you might want to try a grain free diet for a while.

Defendex shampoo which was designed to fight against fleas and mites also washes away debris and soothes the skin. Using both products is a simple and effective way of helping resolve a difficult condition.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Char
