I was just told that my 11 year old Schnauzer has diabetes. I would like to make my own food. What do you suggest?

You would need to consult with a nutritionist to make sure you are meeting all of your dog's supplement requirements. At this time, we do not have any recommendations on how to prepare your own homemade diabetic dog food.

I often give my dogs carrots, sweet potatoes and green beans for a snack. They get a cooked diet of rice, chicken, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots, broccoli and some fruit, this is not a diabetic diet. However,it is specially prepared by a friend that has worked with nutritionist for dogs to make their own food, and is regulated and approved.

A proper diabetic diet (dry kibble) would be typically a high fiber diet like Purina DCO or Hill's w/d or r/d (which can be obtained at your vet).

I wish we had a more natural and homemade recipe to provide you. Have you tried Google to see what you could find? We recommend you also talk with a holistic vet to see what they recommend.

Thank you.
