Broccoli: The Vegetable With Fiber

By Smarty More Blogs by This Author

Ever since you were a child your parents were always telling you to eat your vegetables. Now that you are an adult you might be telling your children and other children to do the same thing. By eating vegetables you are giving your body nutrients that are imperative for survival and good health. However, there is more to some vegetables than vital nutrients. Vegetables may help you fight off many diseases. Certain vegetables like broccoli are also very high in fiber which helps you maintain your blood sugar and keep your digestive system healthy.

Benefits of Broccoli and High Fiber Foods

Broccoli is one of many high fiber fruits or vegetables that help keep you healthy and regular. Some of high fiber foods include canned pumpkin, apples, potato, peas, almonds, lentils, oatmeal, products containing whole wheat and grains, blueberries, and raisins. Broccoli is part of the cabbage family. It is green in color and looks very similar to cauliflower. Both the floret which is to top part of the broccoli and its stalk are editable and contain vital nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, dietary fibers, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium, and more. Just one cup of broccoli will give your body 15 to 10 percents of your daily value of fiber.

Eating foods like broccoli that are high in fiber provides your body with tremendous health benefits that help you maintain proper blood sugar levels and keep your digestive system healthy. Since fiber slows down the rate that sugar is adsorbed into your system the sugar in those foods and others you have eaten are absorbed much slower. This keeps your blood sugar levels from rising too quickly. Not only will it help maintain your blood sugar levels but it will also prevent you from being hungry soon after you eat which cuts down on your chances of overeating. Fiber also helps to keep your digestive system healthy. Since fiber makes your intestines move faster it will signal to your brain once again that you are full. Fiber also cleans your colon by acting like a scrub brush. This helps to clean out bacteria and other types of buildup in your intestines. Lastly, when you eat fiber it helps to keep you regular. By eating broccoli or other high fiber foods your bowel movements will be more regular and reduces the chance of diarrhea or constipation. Because broccoli and other high fiber foods combat against diarrhea and constipation in addition to keeping your digestive system healthy many people with irritable bowel syndrome or IBS benefit greatly from eating a high fiber diet. In additional to eating a high fiber diet many people also use natural supplements to help control their IBS.

  • I agree with you 100%. Broccoli is so good for you and it does wonderful things for your body. I just wish my kids could see it that way. They only see a yucky vegetable that they want nothing to do with. Thanks for this info, you guys really know your stuff!!

  • Most fruits and veggies trigger my IBS symtoms . I can hardly eat any especially gassy ones like broccoli. I find soluble fiber foods help the most like white rice, white bagels, potatoes, carrots, soy, etc.
