Is diabetes race specific?

Yes, it is! Although the incidence of diabetes has been dramatically increasing in all races, some are more likely to get it than others. Here in the United States Native Americans are at the highest risk followed by Mexican Americans, other Hispanic Americans, African Americans, European Americans and then Asian Americans.

It is important to remember that race is just one risk factor among many, with obesity being the strongest risk factor. Regardless of your race, if you are not currently at a healthy weight, then you should a strategy of healthy eating and regular exercise.
