My toy poodle which is 11 years old was diagnosis with diabetes 2 months ago,the vet started him out at 9 units ,today he is taking 15 units of insulin. He eats really good quit drinking alot of water and stop wetting all over , plays/runs after pine cones.I've tested his ear twice daily from day one.Gluose testing shows high 490/low 227. It stays more on the high side .I can't get it to stay around 300 to 340.The vet keeps saying we will get lower,in the mean time what is my dog going thru health wise.Does this sound right to other dog owners that have dogs with diabetes

What are the health consequences of hypoglycemia?

I have experienced countless low blood sugars, without knowing my symptoms were the result of low blood sugar. After eating a healthy breakfast around 8 or 9 am, usually 1/2 cup oatmeal with a big scoop of peanut butter, I have experienced a racing heart, cold sweats, nausea, light-headedness, and usually a terrible headache that I previously thought was a migraine causing all of the symptoms. Later I thought it was caused by sinus pressure from allergies which led to the migraine-like headaches... While another friend thought my symptoms were similar to her own panic-attacks, however I certainly did not feel anxious or panicked - outside of my racing heart beat. As I feel I eat quite well, what would cause these low blood sugars? I have always been active (sports, jogging, hiking) and I do not eat white flour, nor are there processed foods in my diet to any significant amount which may cause a reactive drop in blood glucose. I have had my blood sugars tested first thing in the am during a 'Live like your diabetic' week where I was always told to go eat something and yes, obviously I was hungry and ready to eat. Then recently I had my blood glucose tested at about 10am (After eating breakfast about 8 or 830) and my blood glucose was only 60... As that is low even for a fasting blood glucose, should I be concerned? I know that high blood glucose is unhealthy, but what are the consequences of my lows? Thankyou for your help!

Diabetic Dog's Water Fixation

My 8 1/2 yr old mini schnauzer was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago. My work and life schedule doesn't allow for the rigid schedule required when using insulin. My pup is easily traumatized too. I have chosen the homeopathic remedy, Dia-ionx, as an alternative. I had hopes it would allow my Onyx a chance to live. Over the last 3 wks, my overweight baby has become slim and trim to the point that she really shouldn't lose much more weight. She started refusing food the weekend prior to her vet visit. Once we started Dia-ionx, by day 2 she was eating again. Her constant treks to the water bowl slowed down a bit and she seemed to be feeling much better. We are on day 20. Last night, she refused her dinner, and she wouldn't eat this morning either. She finally ate breakfast this afternoon. Her trips to the water bowl are at a feverish pitch again. I have to monitor her intake or she drinks until it makes her sick and she vomits all over. Her bladder isn't holding well either. Is there anything I can do to alleviate these symptoms or are they permanent now? My house is quickly becoming a mess and, although I know she can't help it, my patience is wearing thin. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Family Member that Doesn't Manage Their Diabetes

My uncle has type II diabetes, but he is not managing it. He doesn't go to the doctor, he eats as much sugar as he wants, and he doesn't exercise. At first, he was doing okay, but my family saw a decline in his health at each family function he attended. He can barely walk; he uses a can for assistance. When he stands up he gets instantly dizzy and almost falls to the ground. And he recently lost one of his index fingers to gangrene. He had to have it surgically removed. I feel like we've tried everything to get him motivated to improve his health. We limit the sugar and sweets at family functions, so the choices are almost gone. But he still will pick the one soda pop that isn't diet and pile on sweets and salty foods. We don't want to bug him with :You should take care of yourself" statements because sometimes that just makes a person shut down. No one likes to hear someone scold them about their health. Is their a point where we should just stop trying? Has anyone had an experience with someone who wouldn't manage their diabetes? What do you suggest our family try to do to help? Or should we step back and let him be?
